Forio, Ischia Island Italy

Forio is a town and comune in the Metropolitan City of Naples, southern Italy, located on the island of Ischia. Its territory includes the town of Panza, the only frazione of Forio and of the island of Ischia. Panza has been an independent village since the 16th century, when the first governmental organization was introduced on the island. In 1975 the inhabitants of Panza attempted to become an independent comune, but the referendum, requested by the inhabitants of Forio, was rejected by the Regional Government of Campania. There are numerous coastal watchtowers, built in the Middle Ages as defenses against raids by Saracen and African pirates.
